Successful Separation of Conjoined Twin in Saudi Arabia

A specialized medical and surgical team from the Saudi program for conjoined twins successfully separated the parasitic twin, Muhammad Abdulrahman Jumaa, at King Abdulaziz Medical City for the National Guard in Riyadh. The intricate procedure took place over eight hours and involved six distinct phases, with contributions from 26 specialists, including medical consultants, nurses, and technical staff from various fields such as anesthesia, pediatric surgery, neurosurgery, plastic surgery, and other supportive specialties.

Dr. Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al Rabeeah, a senior advisor in the Royal Court and head of the surgical team, explained that the separation was performed as planned. The separated twin, who lacked essential life-supporting structures like a heart and brain, had several congenital malformations that impeded normal function, including the underdevelopment of kidneys and the urinary and reproductive systems, along with significant intestinal deficiencies. Dr. Al Rabeeah noted that these medical conditions were disclosed to the parents prior to the operation.

This surgical intervention marks the 63rd procedure undertaken by the Saudi program for conjoined twins, a testament to the Kingdom’s commitment to humanitarian initiatives. Since its inception in 1990, the program has successfully provided care for 149 cases of conjoined twins from 27 friendly nations. Dr. Al Rabeeah expressed his gratitude to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, and His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, for their unwavering support for the program. He emphasized that such medical achievements reflect Saudi Arabia’s proactive stance in humanitarian efforts.

The excellence demonstrated by the medical team was commended, showcasing their high level of skill and dedication. This success symbolizes the core humanitarian values embraced by Saudi leadership, aligning well with the Kingdom’s Vision 2030, which aims to enhance the healthcare sector and improve global health services.

Family members of the conjoined twin expressed their heartfelt gratitude towards the Saudi leadership for their exceptional care and attention granted to their child, Muhammad Abdulrahman Jumaa. They praised the Kingdom’s humanitarian initiatives, highlighting the spirit of generosity and responsibility. The family also conveyed their deep appreciation for the warm reception and hospitality they experienced upon arriving in Saudi Arabia, pledging their prayers for the Kingdom and its leadership.

This operation not only showcases the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s medical capabilities but also reinforces its position as a leader in humanitarian efforts on the global stage. Through their ongoing commitment to assist those in need, Saudi Arabia continues to embody the values of compassion and support, significantly contributing to improving lives and offering hope to families facing similar challenges.
