Launch of the "Imams and Preachers Capacity Building" Training Program in Malé

Today, the capital of the Maldives, Malé, saw the initiation of the "Imams and Preachers Capacity Building" training program organized by the Islamic Military Counter Terrorism Coalition (IMCTC) as part of its strategic initiative, "Wasatiyyah." The event was graced by the presence of the Honorable Minister of Islamic Affairs of the Maldives, Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, the Honorable Minister of Sports, Abdullah Maafannu, and the Secretary-General of the IMCTC, Major General Pilot Mohammed bin Saeed Al-Mughaidi.

During his inaugural speech, Dr. Shaheem emphasized the significance of this program, which is being conducted in collaboration with the Maldives’ National Counter Terrorism Centre. He described the initiative as a crucial effort for enhancing coordination and cooperation in the fight against terrorism and extremism. The minister underscored that terrorism is fundamentally a problem of ideology, necessitating a response centered on promoting awareness and moderation in alignment with Islamic principles. He noted, "The Maldives continues its commitment to combatting terrorism and extremism under the guidance of His Excellency President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu," reinforcing that the coalition can achieve substantial success in countering these threats by working collaboratively with member nations.

In his remarks, Major General Al-Mughaidi underlined that the IMCTC was established with a clear vision aimed at harmonizing international efforts and unifying forces to enhance the intellectual, media, financial, and military capabilities necessary to counter terrorism. The coalition has devised a range of initiatives to build capacities and train specialists, thereby increasing the preparedness of relevant agencies to combat terrorism effectively.

He stated, "Strengthening cooperation among countries and concerned institutions, as well as intensifying efforts to develop mechanisms for monitoring and tracking the tactics of terrorist groups, is crucial for creating a safer and more stable environment." Furthermore, he highlighted that the launch of this strategic initiative in the Maldives is part of the coalition’s broader framework, which encompasses 15 strategic initiatives across four key areas: intellectual, media, countering terrorism financing, and military operations. The coalition aims to implement 90 training programs, along with 20 awareness and educational sessions throughout its member states, contributing to the enhancement of skills necessary for the ongoing struggle against terrorism.

The training program is set to unfold over five days and will feature a series of lectures and workshops. These sessions will focus on understanding the propaganda tactics of extremist groups, the fundamentals of effective communication, skills in conveying messages, and the importance of moderation and balance in discourse. Additionally, the program will facilitate the exchange of successful outreach experiences among participants.

This initiative highlights the proactive steps being taken to combat the rising tide of extremism and terrorist ideology by equipping leaders in the community with the tools they need to advocate for peace and understanding. The collaborative approach of the IMCTC serves as a model for international efforts in addressing these pressing global challenges and underlines the importance of engaging local leaders in the battle against extremism’s ideological foundations.

As the program progresses, it aims not only to elevate the capabilities of religious leaders but also to foster a culture of peace and tolerance, crucial in any concerted effort to eradicate the root causes of terrorism. Through sustained cooperation and commitment, the IMCTC and its member nations are poised to make significant strides in creating a more secure and stable world.
