المملكة العربية السعودية تشارك في جلسة محكمة العدل الدولية حول الأوضاع الإنسانية في فلسطين

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia actively participated in a session held at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague, Netherlands. This session addressed a request for an advisory opinion concerning “Israel’s obligations towards the United Nations and other international organizations and states concerning the occupied Palestinian territories.” Representing Saudi Arabia at this significant gathering was Mohammed bin Saud Al-Nasser, the Director General of the Legal Affairs Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

During his statement, Al-Nasser reiterated Saudi Arabia’s demands for Israel to adhere to its responsibilities as an occupying power under international humanitarian law. He emphasized the crucial need for Israel to provide essential resources for the Palestinian people living in the occupied territories. These essentials include basic provisions such as food, water, shelter, and medical supplies. He underscored that “Israel has the duty to respect and protect the fundamental human rights of the Palestinian people in the occupied Palestinian territories.” Al-Nasser highlighted that Israel’s obstruction of efforts by international entities, including the United Nations, to supply these vital needs constitutes a serious violation of human rights.

In his address, Al-Nasser referenced the United Nations Charter, which imposes on Israel the obligation to cooperate in good faith with the UN and its agencies, including the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA). He asserted that Israel must facilitate and encourage those willing to provide humanitarian and developmental assistance aimed at empowering the Palestinian people to realize their right to self-determination. This respect for the right to self-determination is considered a fundamental principle of international law, central to the issues being presented before the court.

The advisory opinion sought from the ICJ has significant implications, as it seeks to clarify the legal responsibilities Israel holds under international law regarding its actions in the Palestinian territories. This session marked a critical moment for international discourse surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, addressing lingering questions about human rights and humanitarian obligations within the context of occupation.

Saudi Arabia’s involvement signifies its diplomatic stance and commitment to advocating for the rights of Palestinians on global platforms. The Kingdom has consistently called for a just resolution to the Palestinian issue, aligning its position with numerous UN resolutions that underscore the necessity of protecting human rights and ensuring humanitarian access to populations in need.

During the proceedings, Al-Nasser’s remarks were grounded in a legal framework that demands accountability and adherence to established norms governing conflict and occupation. His insistence on Israel’s compliance with international law not only resonates with the broader international community’s stance but also reinforces the urgent need for collaborative efforts to support the Palestinian populace.

The role of the United Nations and its agencies, particularly in facilitating humanitarian aid, was emphasized as an essential part of addressing the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the region. Al-Nasser’s call for Israel to allow and promote humanitarian assistance highlights a critical aspect of international relations and obligations during conflicts. His assertions pointed out that any obstruction of such efforts raises significant ethical and legal questions that require immediate redress.

In summary, Saudi Arabia’s contributions to the ICJ session reflect its dedication to fostering a peaceful resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, advocating for humanitarian rights, and honoring the principles of international law. The outcome of this advisory opinion has the potential to influence future legal discourses, shape international policy on humanitarian obligations, and reinforce the global community’s commitment to supporting the self-determination and welfare of the Palestinian people. As discussions continue, the spotlight remains on Israel’s responsibilities under international law and the vital need for accountability in relation to human rights within the occupied territories.
