Container Handling Numbers Increase by 13.61% Annually in March 2025

The General Authority of Ports “MAWANI” has revealed that all ports in the Kingdom overseen by the authority have witnessed a 13.61% increase in container handling in March 2025 compared to the same period last year. The total number of standard containers reached 699,928, up from 616,079. Exports saw a 31.82% increase, with 280,341 standard containers compared to 212,672 previously. Imports also increased by 7.78% to reach 281,216 standard containers, up from 260,912. However, transshipment containers decreased by 2.89% to 138,371 compared to 142,495 the previous year.
Overall, the total tonnage of cargo handled, including general cargo, bulk solid cargo, and bulk liquid cargo, increased by 8.69% to 21,181,246 tons compared to 19,488,335 tons in the same period last year. The total general cargo was 971,850 tons, bulk solid cargo was 4,515,924 tons, and bulk liquid cargo was 15,693,472 tons. Furthermore, the ports received 870,566 head of livestock, a decrease of 9.42% from 961,131 received the previous year.
The maritime movement recorded a 6.75% increase, with a total of 1,044 ships compared to 978 in the same period last year. The number of passengers also increased by 35.45% to 84,665 passengers, up from 62,507 the previous year. Additionally, the number of vehicles saw a 33.50% increase to reach 90,271 cars, compared to 67,620 the previous year.
In February 2025, MAWANI reported an 18.25% increase in the number of exported containers, totaling 215,491 standard containers compared to 182,229 in the same period the previous year. Passenger numbers also increased by 37.85% to reach 93,400 passengers compared to 67,754 the previous year.
